CURRENT PROJECTS
Celebrating Coonabarabran’s Heritage with New Plaques
The Coonabarabran History Group is proud to announce a new project that will honour some of the town’s much‑loved historic buildings. A series of commemorative brass plaques will soon be installed around Coonabarabran, offering locals and visitors alike a chance to connect with the stories of our past.

President of the History Group, Mrs Nancy Wiese, said: “We were delighted to receive support through the Warrumbungle Shire Council’s heritage grants programme for 2025–26. This funding, together with our own contribution, has made it possible to bring this project to life.”

The History Group will cover two‑thirds of the project costs, ensuring the plaques are carefully crafted and professionally installed. Each plaque will feature a hand‑drawn sketch of the original building along with a short description, the result of extensive research carried out by the Group’s dedicated volunteers.

The plaques will be set into the footpaths in front of the sites, designed to be safe for pedestrians while providing a welcoming spot for people to pause and learn.
Mrs Wiese added: “Similar projects in other towns have proven to be a wonderful attraction, sparking interest among both locals and tourists. We’re excited to see Coonabarabran’s history celebrated in this way.”

This initiative is another step in preserving the unique character of Coonabarabran and sharing its stories with future generations.
